Scot Singletary

Scot Singletary I was born in Austin, Texas, in July of 1956. Growing up I lived in McLean, VA, Greensboro, NC, and Lexington KY. My father was President of the University of Kentucky from 1969 until his retirement in 1987. I attended High School at Bullis Prep in Potomac, MD, and attended college at the Virginia Military Institute where I graduated with a BA in History (pre-unemployment) in 1978. Upon graduation I had a 3-year committment in the US Navy.

I was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy where I served onboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, based out of Norfolk, VA. I was onboard the Nimitz when they launched the aborted Iranian Hostage Rescue from the Gulf of Oman. I watched it from the Bridge of the Carrier where I was standing watch. The Nimitz broke all modern day records for consecutive days at sea during that tour of duty leaving Naples, Italy, on January 3 and not seeing land until May 25th when she returned to her homeport in Norfolk, VA. I left the Navy in the summer of 1981 and moved to Los Angeles, CA, where I was a Sales Rep for Valvoline Oil. After 3 years in LA, I was promoted to District Sales Manager and moved to Dallas, TX. I managed 8 salespeople who covered Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

In 1988 I accepted the position of Southeast Regional Manager for Mayflower Transit. I lived in Atlanta and covered Georgia and North and South Carolina for Mayflower Van Lines as a corporate liason between the Mayflower agents and Mayflower. It was in this capacity that I met the Turrentine family at Smith Dray Line, at that time Mayflower agents. In 1991 Smith Dray Line left Mayflower became an agent for United Van Lines. Smith Dray Line approached me about becoming Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the company and in February of 1992 I accepted. Moving to Greenville was a quality of life decision and I intend to remain here the rest of my life.

I am a member of Thornblade Country Club where I serve on the Membership Committee and can't seem to get under a 20 handicap. I am on the Economic Development Board at the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, and I am a past Chairman of the Chamber's Opportunity Greenville program. I am a graduate of Leadership Greenville Class 23, a member of the Leadership Greenville Forum and 300 for Greenville.
